Frequently Asked Questions

Getting started

What actually happens in the first session?

The main purpose of initial sessions is for us to build an understanding of what you want to get out of therapy, and the things you want to work on. Different things can come up over time, but we build a loose blueprint early. Here are some common areas we cover:
  • What led you to seek out therapy
  • What you want to get out of, or work on in, therapy
  • How often you'd like to attend (for example, twice a week, weekly, or fortnightly)
  • Any previous therapy experience
  • A little about your personal background

Nerves before a first session

Anxiety before sessions, especially initially, is normal. It's also fine not to be quite sure where to start.

Do you see people under 18?

I work with young adults, generally 18 and over. If you're 16 or 17 and thinking about therapy, get in touch first — I'll help point you toward the right support if I'm not the best fit.

What is the difference between a Counsellor and a Psychologist?

Counsellors and Psychologists often work on similar issues but have different training backgrounds. Psychologists are trained specifically in the study of mind and behaviour, often focusing on diagnosis and clinical assessment. Counsellors focus on the therapeutic relationship and holistic support, helping you navigate life transitions, emotional distress, and personal growth through evidence-based talk therapies.

Costs & logistics

Can I get a Medicare rebate?

Currently, counselling services at Percept Therapy are not eligible for Medicare rebates under Mental Health Care Plans. To offset this, I keep my session fees lower than the standard out-of-pocket gap fee often paid to psychologists.

The work itself

Is my session confidential?

Yes. Everything discussed in session stays strictly confidential. The main exceptions are legal requirements where there is an immediate risk of harm to yourself or others, or if files are subpoenaed by a court of law. Information may also be shared in clinical supervision, or when liaising with other professionals involved in your care, though they are held to the same standards of confidentiality. I'll walk you through all of this during our first session, so nothing catches you off guard.

How many sessions will I need?

It varies with your needs and goals. Some people find benefit in short-term work (6–10 sessions), while others prefer longer-term support for deep-seated patterns.

Do you offer crisis support?

Percept Therapy is not a crisis service, and I can't respond to urgent messages straight away. If you are in immediate danger or experiencing a mental health emergency, please contact Lifeline (13 11 14), Beyond Blue (1300 22 4636), or your local hospital emergency department immediately. You can also visit the Get Help Now page.

The full cancellation policy and terms are set out in the service agreement I share before your first session. Need urgent help right now? Please visit Get help now.
